I started my interest with birds at the age of 6. While strolling in Kowloon Park with my father every Sunday morning; where we saw our first Common Kingfisher in my life (I dropped the burger I was eating but couldn't care less at the time). I never stopped since.
A member of the Hong Kong Birdwatching Society (HKBWS). Also a member of the "Sparrow Team" which supports the annual Big Bird Race by World Wide Fund Hong Kong (WWFHK). I have regularly contributed photographs for publications including "A Photo Guide to Hong Kong Birds", "A Living Space" as well as numerous HKBWS bulletins.
A keen traveller, I have birded abroad including Australia, UK, Shetland, South Africa, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, Sabah and Taiwan. In China, I have been to various sites at Yunnan, Sichuan, Hainan, Jiangxi, Guangxi and Guangdong.
I have regularly took educational guided birding, nature tours and workshops for schools and NGOs. Hoping to bring out the interest, as well as awareness and care for nature in children, as well as to educate them about the importance of conservation. I also guided visiting birders, you can email me for more information on birding in Hong Kong.

Hi. I'd be grateful if you could advise me what is the best bird book to get for Hong Kong.
ReplyDeleteThe best bird field guide is 'The Birds of Hong Kong and South China' by Clive Viney, it is slightly outdated now but is still a valuable asset. 'A Photographic Guide to the Birds of Hong Kong' by HKBWS is also a useful book to have.
DeleteMatthew, I recently discovered your blog and find it an absolute birding treasure trove. I now go to your page first for bird information. Keep up the great work!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much for your encouragement, glad you find this blog useful. :D
DeleteHi Matthew Kwan, I just want to point out that you are a huge inspiration for me in my birdwatching adventures! I can't thank you less! May you continue your birdwatching trip for many others to come, and I hope you find another fairy pitta or another rare bird!
ReplyDeleteThank you for your encouragement, knowing people find this blog interesting and useful is a great driving force for me to keep this blog going, thank you for your support. :)
DeleteMatt - just wanted to post that Valerie and I had a great two-and-half days birding with you. How lucky we were to find such an enthusiastic birder and New Territories guide. As a wildlife photographer it was great to find someone who knows that birding and bird photography are different hobbies. And your knowledge of butterflies, dragonflies and lantern bugs filled in the gaps. Very many thanks, Charles & Valerie
